MUSIC
Raised on doo-wop and show tunes, and enamored at an early age of Elton John and Bette Midler, Susan is an unabashed devotee of popular music. As a singer, she can best be described as an actor of modern musical literature, a song stylist who can switch effortlessly from Harold Arlen to LaVern Baker, from Laura Nyro to the Rolling Stones, from Joni Mitchell to one of her own tunes, all without compromising emotional honesty or sacrificing musical grace. And as she does, her audience comes along joyfully for the ride, reveling in the worlds she visits and the stories she creates.
Susan has been seen on music stages throughout New York from Joe's Pub to Carnegie Hall, in lofts and bars and theatres from Hoboken, NJ to the Italian Alps, and was most amazed to appear at Doug Weston's Troubadour in Los Angeles, home to Elton's breakout concert in 1970 and Carole King's debut as a solo artist that same year. (Yes, she kissed the walls backstage.)
She has collaborated with such inspiring musical artists as Lisa Sokolov, Mary McBride, Diane Garisto, Kenny Werner, members of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Aaron Dugan of Matisyahu, Anders Nilsson, Eli Yamin, William Parker, Bob Dorough, and Jon Spurney, among others. She is thrilled to have even once sung with the pop icon Lulu!
Susan as Elton John, Halloween 1976
“America's Sweetheart of Song for the New Century! Susan Murphy sings like an angel and breaks your heart like the girl who lives next door...that girl you've had a crush on ever since you can remember. She brings you back to the first love songs you heard on the radio by the Beatles, the Stones, or Petula Clark."
